Opposition leader Bobi Wine has spoken out following Monday’s standoff at his residence in Magere, describing the continued security deployment around his home as an “illegal siege” and accusing authorities of violating his constitutional rights. In a statement posted on his social media platforms on Monday evening, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi condemned the blocking of lawyers and Members of Parliament who had attempted to access his residence earlier in the day. “The regime continues to illegally occupy my home and deny access to my lawyers and colleagues without any lawful justification,” he…

The long-awaited elections for Local Council One (LC1) and Local Council Two (LC2) leaders will be held in March, the government has confirmed, ending years of postponement that left grassroots administrative units operating under extended mandates. The Minister for Local Government, Mr Raphael Magyezi, said preparations are underway to facilitate voting across more than 70,000 villages and parishes countrywide. The polls are expected to fill key leadership positions at the lowest tiers of Uganda’s governance system. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is set to address the 18th Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy on February 18, 2026, in Switzerland. The summit, which brings together human rights defenders, activists, and victims from across the globe, offers him a high-profile platform to highlight Uganda’s post-election environment and the alleged abuses that followed the January 15 polls. This will not be Wine’s first engagement with the summit. In April 2022, he addressed the forum under the theme “How to Topple a Dictator,” detailing his experiences with torture, intimidation, illegal detentions, and violent crackdowns…
Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has gained a political boost following yesterday’s European Parliament resolution urging independent investigations into alleged post-election abuses in Uganda. Analysts say the resolution strengthens Bobi Wine’s international advocacy, even though it does not directly trigger action at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The resolution condemned alleged intimidation, arbitrary detentions, internet shutdowns and violence surrounding the January 15, 2026 presidential election. It also called for the immediate release of opposition figures, including Bobi Wine, and urged the Ugandan government to allow independent investigations into possible crimes against humanity. While the European…

In the message widely shared across social media and local news platforms, Mr Museveni acknowledged the results published by the Electoral Commission of Uganda, in which he was officially declared the winner of the national vote. A case of incitement to violence against National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has been dismissed by the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court for lack of jurisdiction, but the politician will remain in custody awaiting trial on a separate matter. In a statement posted Thursday on official party social media channels, NUP said the Nakawa court struck out the incitement count after Mufumbiro’s lawyers successfully argued the court lacked authority to entertain the case. The charge, which alleged Mufumbiro incited supporters to violence and attacks on security personnel, was filed in late 2025. However, the dismissal does not…
The European Parliament has strongly condemned the conduct of Uganda’s general elections held on January 15, 2026, describing the polls as marred by widespread intimidation, violence, fraud and a nationwide internet blackout. In a resolution adopted on Thursday by 514 votes in favour, three against and 56 abstentions, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed deep concern over what they termed systematic abuses targeting opposition figures, civil society organisations and journalists in the aftermath of the vote. The lawmakers singled out the suspension of civil society groups and the “significant threats and intimidation” directed at opposition leaders, including National Unity…
