MINNEAPOLIS, USA — Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unknown substance by a man during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis on Tuesday, in an incident that has drawn national attention and widespread condemnation from political leaders.
The attack occurred at Omar’s first town hall of the year, held in the north of the city, as she was addressing constituents on federal immigration policy. Footage and eyewitness accounts show a man in the audience suddenly approaching the podium, taking out what appeared to be a syringe and spraying the liquid in Omar’s direction before being tackled to the ground by security personnel.
Minneapolis police, present at the event, immediately arrested the suspect on the scene and booked him into Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault. Forensic teams were called to investigate the substance used in the attack.
Omar was not seriously injured and refused to leave the event, continuing with her scheduled remarks for about 25 minutes after the incident. Officials and attendees reported that the liquid had a strong, vinegarlike smell, although its exact nature has not been confirmed.
The attack comes amid heightened political tensions in the city, particularly over federal immigration enforcement. During her remarks before the incident, Omar had criticised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in the wake of controversial federal actions in Minneapolis.
In a social media post after the town hall, Omar described herself as “a survivor” and vowed not to be intimidated. “This small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work,” she wrote, thanking supporters and saying she remained focused on her mission.
Leaders from both sides of the political spectrum denounced the assault. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said violence has “no place” in civic discourse, and Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace called the attack “deeply disturbing,” emphasising that elected officials should not face physical threats even amid heated political disagreements.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of public officials and the increasing hostility surrounding political debate in the United States. U.S. Capitol Police reports indicate that threats against members of Congress have risen significantly in recent years, underscoring broader anxieties about political violence.
As authorities continue their investigation, Omar’s team has said she will seek screening by medical professionals as a precaution, though she appears to be in stable condition.
