MUKONO — The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Mr Robert Peter Kabanda, has been declared the newly elected Mukono Municipality Mayor after a decisive victory in the 2026 local government elections.
The Mukono Municipality Returning Officer, Ms Emily Amongin, on Tuesday announced that Mr Kabanda secured 13,112 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Mr Micdadi Mulimila of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who garnered 5,054 votes.
The incumbent mayor, Mr Erisa Nkoyooyo, came third after polling 2,283 votes, according to the official results released by the Electoral Commission.
Ms Amongin declared Mr Kabanda the winner for the 2026–2031 mayoral term, citing his clear majority of the valid votes cast.

Speaking shortly after his declaration, Mr Kabanda thanked voters for their confidence and pledged to prioritise improved service delivery, transparency and inclusive leadership in Mukono Municipality.
The Mukono mayoral contest was closely watched, with voters turning out to choose among candidates from both the ruling party and the opposition amid heightened political interest in urban local governments.
Electoral Commission officials said the voting and tallying process in the municipality was conducted peacefully, with no major incidents reported by the close of polling.
Mr Kabanda’s victory adds to NUP’s growing influence in central Uganda’s urban centres following the 2026 general elections.
