Political activity in Mukono District has intensified following the recent general elections, with newly elected legislators beginning consultations aimed at shaping their legislative agenda and strengthening coordination within the opposition.

Yesterday, Mukono Woman Member of Parliament–elect Sheilah Amaniyo, Nakifuma County MP Sulaiman Kiwanuka and Mukono South MP Robert Maseruka held strategic discussions as part of early efforts to align their priorities ahead of the new parliamentary term.

The leaders later visited Parliament where they met the Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi for what they described as a familiarization meeting intended to strengthen cooperation among opposition legislators.

According to sources close to the discussions, the meeting focused on coordination within Parliament, legislative planning and identifying key development issues affecting communities in Mukono District.

The engagement comes shortly after the 2026 general elections in which the opposition National Unity Platform secured a sweeping victory across the district, winning all parliamentary seats including Mukono Municipality, Mukono North, Mukono South, Nakifuma County and the Woman MP position.

Official election results show that Sheilah Amaniyo won the Mukono District Woman MP seat with 97,421 votes, defeating her closest rival from the ruling National Resistance Movement. Meanwhile, Robert Maseruka secured the Mukono South seat with 19,621 votes while Sulaiman Kiwanuka won Nakifuma County with over 32,000 votes.

Political observers say the recent consultations among the Mukono legislators reflect a deliberate attempt to consolidate the opposition’s influence both at the district level and in Parliament.

During the meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, discussions reportedly centered on legislative priorities such as improving service delivery, strengthening oversight of government programs and ensuring that issues affecting Mukono residents are adequately represented in Parliament.

Mukono District, located in Uganda’s central region, remains one of the most politically active areas in Buganda, with a large and diverse voter population. The district has in recent years emerged as a stronghold for the opposition, particularly the National Unity Platform.

Analysts say that cooperation among legislators representing the district will be crucial in advancing development priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare services, youth employment and support for local farmers.

Observers also note that early coordination between newly elected Members of Parliament and the office of the Leader of the Opposition is often important in helping first-term legislators understand parliamentary procedures, committee structures and strategies for advancing constituency interests through legislation.

For leaders like Robert Maseruka, a former Makerere University Guild President entering Parliament for the first time, such engagements are expected to help shape their legislative approach as they transition from campaign politics to national policymaking.

Similarly, Sheilah Amaniyo has previously indicated that her focus in Parliament will include economic empowerment programs, particularly initiatives aimed at supporting women and youth in Mukono District.

Meanwhile, Nakifuma County MP Sulaiman Kiwanuka has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in public service delivery, pledging to closely monitor government programs affecting communities in his constituency.

Political analysts say that the meetings could mark the beginning of broader coordination among opposition leaders from the Buganda region as they prepare for debates and legislative battles expected in the upcoming parliamentary term.

As the new Parliament prepares to fully resume its activities, residents in Mukono District will be watching closely to see how their representatives translate campaign promises into concrete policy actions and development outcomes.

The consultations also signal a renewed effort by Mukono leaders to present a united political front as they seek to advance the district’s interests at the national level.
