Former Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General Daudi Kabanda has found himself at the center of a political storm after Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced his removal from the influential position, days after the lawmaker publicly praised National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
Muhoozi, who is also the Chief of Defence Forces and PLU chairman, announced on Monday morning that Fadil Twaha had been appointed the new Secretary General of the pressure group with immediate effect. He directed Kabanda to hand over office immediately, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure.
The announcement came just days after Kabanda appeared on a YouTube talk show where he spoke highly of Bobi Wine, describing the opposition leader as a great man and acknowledging his political significance in Uganda.
Kabanda’s remarks quickly went viral on social media, with many observers questioning how one of Muhoozi’s close allies could openly praise a politician who has repeatedly clashed with the First Son. Muhoozi has over the years frequently attacked Bobi Wine through his social media posts and public statements.
Although Muhoozi did not provide reasons for Kabanda’s dismissal, the timing of the decision has fueled speculation among political commentators and supporters that the MP’s comments about Bobi Wine may have contributed to the fallout.
The development marks a dramatic turn for Kabanda, who had been among the most vocal defenders of both Muhoozi and the Patriotic League of Uganda. He previously played a key role in mobilizing support for the organization and often used his public platforms to advance its agenda.
Neither Kabanda nor PLU had issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the leadership changes by the time of publication.
The removal has already generated heated debate online, with supporters of both the ruling establishment and the opposition weighing in on the unexpected development.
Whether Kabanda’s praise of Bobi Wine was merely coincidental or the trigger behind his removal remains unclear, but the incident has once again highlighted the complex and often unpredictable nature of Ugandan politics.
