National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has joined hundreds of Ugandans mourning the death of Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, who died following a mob attack in Kampala.

In a social media post, Bobi Wine expressed sadness over the rugby player’s death and called for justice, urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable.

The opposition leader condemned mob justice, saying no Ugandan should lose their life at the hands of a crowd without due process of the law.

Gongodyo, 27, was a player for Black Pirates Rugby Club and a member of the Uganda Rugby Cranes national team. Reports indicate that he was attacked by a mob in the Bukoto area after being accused of stealing a handbag. He later succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.

His death has shocked Uganda’s sporting fraternity, with fellow players, club officials and fans describing him as a talented athlete whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances.

Bobi Wine’s statement adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding justice for the slain rugby star. Several Ugandans on social media have condemned the incident and called for stronger action against mob violence, which remains a recurring problem in different parts of the country.

Police have since launched investigations into the incident and announced the arrest of several suspects believed to have participated in the attack.

The Uganda Rugby Union also paid tribute to Gongodyo, describing him as a dedicated player who represented both his club and country with distinction.

His death has reignited a national conversation about mob justice, with human rights advocates warning that innocent people can easily become victims when crowds take the law into their own hands.

Many social media users echoed Bobi Wine’s call for accountability, arguing that regardless of the allegations against Gongodyo, he deserved to be subjected to a lawful judicial process rather than mob punishment.

As investigations continue, Ugandans are now looking to police and prosecutors to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for the rugby player’s death face the full force of the law.
