NUP Sweeps All Five Parliamentary Seats in Mukono District

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has strengthened its political foothold in Mukono District after winning all five parliamentary seats in the 2026 general elections.

The party achieved a clean sweep in a district where it had previously struggled to dominate. In a notable upset, young newcomer Maseruka Robert defeated the Democratic Party (DP) incumbent, Fred Kayondo, in Mukono South.

NUP also retained control of Mukono Municipality through veteran legislator Betty Nambooze. In Mukono North, incumbent Mulima Mayuni Abdullah, who earlier took over the seat from Hon. Ronald Kibuule, successfully defended his position.

The District Woman MP race saw major changes. The sitting MP, Hon. Hanifa Nabukeera (NUP), failed to secure the party’s endorsement and instead opted to contest for the Mukono Municipality seat against Betty Nambooze. NUP subsequently nominated Sheilah Amaniyo as its flag bearer for Woman MP, a decision that paid off as she went on to win the seat.

In Nakifuma Constituency, incumbent Hon. Fred Simbwa lost NUP’s endorsement and chose to run under the Democratic Alliance (DA), led by Mathias Mpuuga, the former NUP Deputy President for the Buganda region. However, Simbwa was overwhelmingly defeated by Kiwanuka Sulaiman in a landslide victory.
