Moses Karangwa Kaliisa death

Moses Karangwa Kaliisa, the proprietor of Sauti FM and a longtime National Resistance Movement (NRM) mobiliser in Kayunga District, has passed on following a reported fatal road accident.

Karangwa reportedly got involved in the accident on Sunday evening at Ssukka Village near Lake Oil along the Kayunga road. Sources close to the family said he sustained serious injuries and was initially rushed to Kayunga Hospital for emergency treatment.

Due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala where he breathed his last.

News of Karangwa’s death spread rapidly on Sunday evening, triggering an outpouring of grief from political leaders, business associates and residents across Kayunga and the greater Buganda region.

Karangwa was widely known for his influence within NRM structures in Kayunga and beyond, where he built a reputation as a wealthy businessman, political mobiliser and outspoken party strategist. Over the years, he became one of the most recognisable political figures in the district, often playing a central role in party activities and grassroots mobilisation.

Apart from politics, he was also the proprietor of Sauti FM, a radio station based in Kayunga that became influential in the region’s political and social discourse.

His death comes at a time when he had once again expressed interest in strengthening his position within the ruling party’s top leadership structures. Karangwa had previously contested for the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) Vice Chairperson seat for Buganda region but lost to former State Minister Godfrey Kiwanda during the 2020 party elections. He later renewed his ambitions in subsequent party mobilisation activities ahead of the 2025/2026 political season.

Karangwa was also known nationally through the political activities of his daughter, Jackline Birungi, who contested for the Kayunga District Woman MP seat. Her campaigns frequently drew attention because of the influence and mobilisation networks associated with her father.

Leaders from both the ruling party and opposition camps have started sending condolence messages describing Karangwa as a bold mobiliser who commanded influence in central Uganda politics for many years.

By press time, police had not yet released a comprehensive statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the accident. Family members and close associates were also yet to announce burial arrangements.

His passing leaves a significant gap in Kayunga’s political and business circles, where he remained an influential figure for decades.
