Kampala — Dr Lina Zedriga Waru Abuku, the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has officially assumed office as Acting President of the party following the temporary absence of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine).
Kyagulanyi, who recently left Uganda to engage in international consultations, appointed Dr Zedriga to oversee party operations and strategy while he is abroad. The announcement was made to ensure continuity in leadership during a critical period for the opposition.
As acting party president, Dr Zedriga will coordinate day-to-day NUP activities, manage internal structures, and engage with party stakeholders. She will also represent the party in key engagements, ensuring that NUP’s programs, strategies, and communications continue uninterrupted.
Why Bobi Wine Trusted Lina Zedriga to Act as NUP President Amid Leadership Vacuum
Political analysts note that her leadership comes at a time of heightened political pressure on opposition parties, with some lawmakers still navigating challenges following the January 2026 general elections.
The appointment underscores the importance of strong internal structures within NUP, especially when the principal leader is absent. Dr Zedriga’s role highlights the party’s efforts to maintain operational continuity, manage grassroots engagement, and safeguard its political agenda.
Supporters and party leaders have welcomed Dr Zedriga’s appointment, calling it a demonstration of NUP’s resilience and organizational depth. Some political commentators, however, warn that sustained absence of Kyagulanyi could challenge the opposition’s effectiveness unless structures remain strong.
Dr Zedriga is expected to engage actively with party organs, communicate policies, and coordinate responses to ongoing political developments until Bobi Wine returns. Her leadership will be closely watched by members, civil society, and the international community interested in Uganda’s political landscape.
The coming weeks will test Dr Zedriga’s capacity to manage NUP operations and maintain party cohesion.
With the acting leadership in place, NUP seeks to maintain momentum, strengthen grassroots support, and ensure that Bobi Wine’s absence does not hinder its activities in Uganda’s complex political environment.
